On Sunday, June 29th, we hope to "harvest" one mile of pennies - or 84,480 little copper coins! Please help with this special offering.

Vacation Bible School

Summertime Vacation Bible School is an annual tradition at CUMC. Beach Party: Surfin' Through the Scriptures will take place August 4 - 10. Join us at the church Monday through Thursday for Fun Time from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Friday is a Water Party at Athens City Park from 6:00 to 8:30pm. On Saturday, we plan to take a trip to Glenwood Park Retirement Village to share our beach party music, and there will be a practice for the next day's VBS Celebration. Meet at 10:00am Sunday morning for a final rehearsal, and invite all your family and friends to attend CUMC at 11:00am for a VBS Celebration service!

VBS Offering to Support "Nothing But Nets"

Offerings collected at this year's Vacation Bible School will be directed to Nothing But Nets. This organization provides children's bed netting as a simple but highly effective way to combat the mosquito-borne spread of malaria in Africa. Every $10 collected will provide a net for a child. Nothing But Nets is a collaboration of several group, including the United Methodist Church. Go to www.nothingbutnets.net for information about this worthy cause.

Church-Wide Yard Sale

Saturday, August 2nd from 7:00am to 2:00pm, the women of the church will hold a church-wide yard sale. Baked goods, hot dogs, chips, and drinks will be on sale. All proceeds will go to support the church's apportionments. Donations of yard sale items and foods are appreciated. Parish Ham Dinner

The Parish Ham Dinner will be held Thursday, August 21st at the Family Center at First UMC in Princeton. Dinner starts at 6:00pm. The cost for adults is $6; children under 12 are $3. ($18 maximum cost per family.) All proceeds will support missions. Report from Annual Conference

In June, Tom Bone returned from Annual Conference, held on the campus of West Virginia Wesleyan University. His report on Membership, Budget, and messages from the Bishop will appear in the Summer issue of CrossTalk. Pastor Greg was elected to serve on the General Commission on United Methodist Men. Also elected to state-wide committees are Kathy Fredeking (Christian Unity), Lauren Godwin (Young Adult Ministry), Greg Godwin (Nominations Team), and Kathy Smith (Higher Education Campus Ministry).

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." -Matthew 28:19. This year, the WV Annual Conference is sponsoring "School of Evangelism: Claiming the Great Commission," a two-day event where we can join together to learn how to better share God' love with others. The event will be held September 19-20, at the lovely, comfortable, state-of-the-art Meeting Hall at the West Virginia Nazarene Camp in Summersville WV. Keynote speakers are Bishop Scott Jameson Jones (Kansas area), The Rev. Dr. Kwasi Kena (director of evangelism ministries, general board of discipleship), and Bishop Richard J. Wills, Jr (Nashville area). If you are interested, please contact Pastor Greg. He is planning to attend.

Concord Church's 150th Anniversary!

Concord Church will celebrate our 150th anniversary at a special service on October 19, 2008. Bishop Ernest Lyght will be our guest preacher. Please reserve this date on your calendar, and join us for this celebration of Athens' Historic Community Church!
